Here are the golden nuggets. Success patterns are more valuable than ideas. Let me explain. Ideas, while very powerful, require trial and error. A lot of time to put into action. Think about manufacturing, for instance. First you have an idea, then a proof of concept, then working prototype, then small production batches, and finally full scale production. This takes months, maybe even years. And you may have met some people that are good collectors of ideas. They may be even great ideas, but they do little else. Forget everything you heard about ideas. You're not looking for ideas. You're looking for success patterns. That's right. Success patterns are different. Success patterns are better. Why? Well, success patterns are proven. Have a logical sequence of steps to follow, have an action imperative and deliver consistent results. In today's content rich program, you're going to learn valuable success patterns from our very special guest that we have here today, an international community driven wait for it painter But not just any painter. Nico Basurto:
You're very welcome. Thank you for having me, Greta.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
Thank you so much. So Nico, you are originally basurto. That is, you know, the way that I'm saying, it almost sounds Italian. You are. You are from Mexico? Yes. But you've been in the United States for a long time. Yep.

Nico Basurto:
20 plus years.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
20 plus years. Well, today, guys, we bring you these success patterns. International show as we have a German and a Mexican here with us on the show. And I'm pretty sure I have several folks from all around the globe that are watching here today. So please drop us a quick hello where you're calling in from and where you are. Joining us for the Success Pattern Show. Now, house painting, you know, that sounds like a very transactional thing, Nico, tell us about how you got into house painting.

Nico Basurto:
First. You know, I got into house painting because, you know, from a young age, I always been passionate about fixing things and improving things. I'm a very you know, I like to use my hands for for work. And so I was introduced to it by my oldest brother, who was already a painter when I came to the United States. And I used to go and tag along with him on the weekends or, you know, in the afternoons to just kind of learn and see what he was doing. And I quickly fell in love with the art of house painting. Um, you know, it seems like something very simple, very transactional, but it's actually not. What I've learned is that, you know, painting is easy unless you know how to do it. Um, so again, I quickly fell in love with that because, you know, me being a curious kid that always wanted to improve things and now I'm presented with the, you know, an idea of grabbing an old beat up house or a brand new house that is got bare surfaces and I can turn it into a home for for the homeowners. Uh, it was, it was, you know, easy for me. It was an easy choice.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
I love what you just said. You're turning a house into a home. And, you know, I think we have several folks here on that are in the real estate sector. And I have here same wavelength. Someone here, let me put it on here. Same wavelength. Entrepreneur. Just talking about real estate as investment options with husband. Looking forward to the knowledge today. Love it. And we all know you know if you've ever done any kind of investment in real estate, we all know what this phrase means. And I'm going to I'm going to share it with you. Lipstick on a pig. Now, it sounds like you are not the kind of person and your company and the people that you are working with and working for are not looking for lipstick on a pig. Tell me more about that.

Nico Basurto:
Correct. And it's nothing wrong with that. I mean, some people, you know, do that. So by by no mean I'm going to say that this is better than than what some people do. But, you know, it's just a matter of choice. You know, again, when you're super passionate about something, when when you breathe and you talk paint and you talk about finishes and and ways of preserving your your multi-million dollar, you know, home, um, it's just really what resonated with me and that's that's what resonates with everybody that works with me is a requirement that they must have a passion for, you know, high end finishes and and meticulous detailing and, you know, all those little time consuming, you know, that takes all your patience and and things. And again, this is just my my passion. This is what we believe in, um, of, you know, taking care of that, you know, new homes, you know, mansions and residents that, you know, they need upkeep on a daily basis.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
Yeah. And if you don't keep them up on a daily basis, you're in the Bay Area in California. It it I'm pretty sure it's it's going to be, you know, eventually it's going to bite you if you're not staying on it. If you're not staying on top of it, if you're not staying in front of it. Now, from what I know about your culture culturally, your family person. Right. You came with your mother to this country. Yes. Um, and it doesn't just sound like that. The. The family aspect stays within you. You are making a a intentional effort in putting it out there in the purposeful work that you do. And golly, up until now, I've never talked to a painter that says I'm my business, what I am doing. I love it. It's purposeful. It's exactly what I'm here to do. And I love that about you because you make it about not yourself. You make it about the people that you make a home for, the people that you are providing your services to, the people that you are giving a surrounding for their family. So where does family fit in for you?

Nico Basurto:
Nico You know, family is really, really important to me. Um, you know, from a young age I understood, you know, the, the, um, the priorities and having very clear, um, and, you know, when I initially, when I say the first one, some people kind of freak out, like because priority number one has to be me. Because without me being strong and healthy and prepared and educated, I can't help anybody. So priority number one is me. Uh, priority number two is family. Without family, you don't enjoy your work, and you don't have a happy life. You got to have family. And then number three comes your work, which is. Turn it into my passion and keep saying that it's a passion because, you know, I never really looked at it that way. But when you work 12, 14 hours a day on something and you don't feel it as work, you just want to keep on going. You know, the sun is down already and it's dark and you still want to keep on going. It's got to be passion.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
It is passion, clearly. I mean, I hear it. I see it. So let's talk a little bit about little Niko growing up. Did you always have that passion? Did you always have that drive of making something not just look okay, but improving things and making things more beautiful and better? Tell me more about where that stems from.

Nico Basurto:
Yes, absolutely. As I probably already said, you know, I have always been very curious, like like curiosity. For me, it's just naturally like I'm always want to explore things. Grab a cup or a grab a brush or a grab, you know, anything. And then go like, what if we tweak this a little bit? With it work a little better, would it have a little more power? Would he last a little longer? Would it serve better? And so that that's, you know, and then being raised by my grandma, I was literally just free. Like I wasn't imposed. You got to do this. You got to do that. You got to behave like this. You got to be this person. I was raised free. So I was I started to develop the skill of making choices very early on because I was given that the power that, yes, you know, it's your choice and just understand that everything that you do is going to have consequences, whether good or bad. And guess what? They're yours. So make sure that the choices that you make, they're going to be to your benefit. And so but curiosity has always been my number one power.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
It's something that I keep seeing from our guest experts that are on the success pattern show that curiosity in paired with drive like with tenacity and the and the consistent um desire to improve to be better, to learn from the feedback. I'm not even saying mistakes the feedback that we're getting, like you said, you know, there's going to be consequences. Those consequences can very well be. You know, some people will look at the consequences and say, Oh, that wasn't so good. I don't ever want to do that again. But there's learning in that.

Nico Basurto:
Absolutely. Absolutely.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
Have you ever. So here's a funny question. Have you ever painted a house where someone came to you and you work with, you know, million dollar homes and they said, I want I want this color, I want I want orange, I want like, I want almost neon orange. And you're like, oh, it's not going to look good. It's not it's not going to look good, whatever the color was. And then you put the paint on and there and then they see and they're like, You know what, Nico? You were right. We should have listened to you. Has anything like that ever happened to you?

Nico Basurto:
Every day. Every day. Like, people will bring a piece of fabric or sometimes even a book that has a teal color something. Can we match this and, you know, a flower bouquet or, you know, sometimes even a flower. And I really like how this color just kind of looks this way from this light and then it looks different from this angle. So absolutely. And so throughout the years, I have developed the skill of of listening and then kind of let them answer themselves like, okay, yes, you want to see this color here and you want to see this sheen or this on this door. You know, maybe just imagine it. Just just let's take another, you know, step back and look at it a little further away. I mean, is this something that you are 100% positive and then. Well, I will always suggest to, you know, test small. I'm a true believer of testing, not guessing. So whenever there's there's a doubt in anything, I always suggest, let's start small, let's do one door or one little swatch, or we can do a brush out for you and look at it, see the actual paint, see it with your furniture, with your, you know, window coverings and stuff, and then we'll go from there.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
I love what you just said. Testing, not guessing. That is, if we can just bottle that. I think a lot of people can benefit from that and it's the little patches, right? So I love I want to reiterate on what you just said, too, that people are giving their own answers. You are basically a paint coach, if you will. Yeah. You're letting them make the decision, of course. And you're you're you're you're helping them make that make a sound decision.

Nico Basurto:
Exactly. And so I literally go through a series of questions and just like, okay, what is your your favorite tone? What is your favorite hue like? And then I started observing their homes, you know, the type of furniture they have and and just kind of putting things together and understanding. And when we at that stage, I just leave my personal opinion out because I can like just white or I can like red or I can like, you know, any color, but it's not my home, it's their home. And so therefore I got to help them discover themselves, what they really like. And then based on on that, those answers that, you know, repeated colors that they mentioned, then I can make suggestions like, okay, based on this, I would suggest this color. What do you think? Is this something that you would be, you know, happy to live with and then understand them? So it's really it takes a lot of patience and a lot of skill to fully learn to listen to them and then really help them and give them exactly what they what they need.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
You truly are a paint coach. You are the improvement coach. And I love it. And and if no one has ever told you that, I'm going to coin it for you. What makes you jump? And I think I already know the answer to this, but I'm going to ask it anyway. What makes you jump out of bed in the morning with just absolute excitement?

Nico Basurto:
Curiosity? Absolutely. Like. Like like I said, when I go to bed, I still I still thinking like, what if I try this color? What if I try this, you know, uh, you know, speech with my guys? Because that's another thing that I do. I really talk to my guys and try to help them and understand them and bring them up to 2 to 2 speed and try to be as clear as possible on what our goals are as a group. And so I'm always curious, what if I do this? What if I offer this? What if I ask them this question? And so first thing that that I do is like, oh, maybe I can I can say this, maybe I can I can ask him if this would help him. And so curiosity is the number one power. And and you know what drives me? And then there's there's a bunch of other ones like, you know, like I've been learning that the more I know, the more I learn how much I don't know. So it's I don't know if it makes sense, but how that works. But yes, exactly. So so when you stay, you know, you know, with your bandage over your eyes like you don't see anything, you don't know anything, like you're fine. But then as you start learning and discovering ways of speaking to people and trying to help people have clarity in their lives, it just, you know, it really teaches you how much you got to learn, how much you don't know. Um, and you know, of course, I always got a kick thinking that I still got a lot more to grow every single day. I tell this to my wife and my family. I feel like a kid in pre-K. Like I'm barely starting. I feel like I'm barely starting. Like I'm barely scratching the surface. I got so much more room to grow.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
Well, leaders are learners in my book, and you clearly are an incredible leader. So you have you have a team, you have a crew that you work with. You have office staff that you work with. What would you say as a leader looking back at the last, let's just say ten years, you know, we've overcome a pandemic or I wish to say we've overcome a pandemic. I'm not so sure, but that's just what my belief system. Um, what would you say has made the the biggest impact or has the biggest impact on you as a leader? Nico?

Nico Basurto:
I would say my personal development. Um, I, I feel like through, you know, testing and being curious, I have developed myself. I come from very humble beginnings, uh, very, very small town, you know, with 20 plus houses. That's what I was raised until the age of 15, 16 years old. And so I was very limited in resources. There wasn't, you know, running electricity, there wasn't running water, there wasn't TV. Um, there was only a little battery operated radio. That was our only connection to the outside world. Um, so when I was brought into the United States, I felt like I was, I was feeding from a fire hydrant hose. Like, there's so much information available, there's so much that we can learn and develop ourselves into. So, so the biggest, uh, you know, benefit of all this has been the personal development and, and by doing so, I have, you know, helped a lot of people, like I said, achieve clarity, understand what they want and kind of point them in the right direction. Um, I started, you know, coaching soccer when my kids were younger. My oldest kids were younger. I coached soccer for 13 years. And, and just being around kids coaching soccer when I wasn't a soccer player at all, I didn't know that sport until I got into it. But guess what? Once I started doing that, I just went deep into it. I started reading books. Back then, there wasn't much available on the internet, so I used to go to the library every single day, come home with ten books about soccer, soccer drills. And I just wanted to make a difference. I saw the way most of the coaches were running the practices and the games, and and I felt that it was unfair that the kids weren't getting a real opportunity for them to grow and develop. And I felt that I could I could make a difference. And I stepped in. I got, you know, I stay in there for about 13 years until my two oldest just were, you know, went on to college. I ended up coaching high school soccer, varsity soccer, um, just by by reading books and downloading PDFs from online and, and, and so that's, that's just the my, my philosophy about it. Like, like I said, my curiosity. I'm just curious.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
What a what a great success pattern right there. And what would you say now we know we know a lot about Nico. I want to learn more from Nico. What do you avoid at all cost?

Nico Basurto:
Huh? I want to say just using foul language like profanity. Um, I'm not offended by it, but I just don't enjoy it. Um, so that and confrontations like, like if there's someone that disagrees with me. Um, you know, I was taught this lesson by one of the coaches at the high school when we were coaching. I was younger back then and I was, you know, a little more of a rebel. Um, and he was a bit wiser, this guy from Argentina. Um, and, and, you know, I was doing the practice one way and then he came and switched it and that really bugged me. And so I told him, I said, Hey, you know, the, the, the biggest power that we have with the kids is the respect. And if you come and make me look bad in front of them, I'm going to lose their respect and they're not going to listen to me anymore. And he he just stay quiet and listen to me. And then he goes like, you know, Nico, that's the beauty of life that we can always agree to disagree. Like, it's okay. So you have your opinion? I have my opinion, but we can still work together. Um, and so that's, that's a big lesson that I repeated almost on a daily basis. And I tell my guys like, we can always agree to disagree, so we don't need to argue. We don't we don't need to insult each other. We don't need to to use profanity. We don't need to, you know, lower our standard to to just, you know, speak nonsense. We can agree to disagree. And if you have the patience and if you have the calmness, we can we can discuss this and we can make it we can make it work. You know, we can come to good terms, but being respectful. So that's that would be one thing that I would avoid at all cost, you know, foul language and just, uh, confrontations.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
So, so far what I heard from you and this is beautiful. Thank you for sharing that with us. Uh, curiosity, tenacity, um, keeping it clean and continuing to grow within yourself. So that's part of the curiosity. And it starts with one self. Who who am I and how can I be a better version? Than I am right now. So we're. We're creating our future, right? That's what we do from here on forward right now. I mean, you know, this show is going to live on for a very long time on over 40 platforms. So what do you want to tell your future self, Nico? What do you want to tell the future altogether? What are you putting out there?

Nico Basurto:
I would say, um, continue to be curious again, um, be focused, uh, be humble, be you because, you know, you, you have special talents that no one else has. And in my job in life is to discover those talents. And so I have to be me. I can't pretend to be anybody else. Um, and the last one I will say, um, you know, just be grateful. Um, always operate on the grateful mentality. Um, and I, I preach this to my guys on every, every Monday when we have our team meeting in the morning. Like, you know, guys, I know there's going to be some clients that are going to be a bit, a little difficult, a little. They're going to ask a lot more than than what you wish they did. But always be grateful because without the client, you know, we wouldn't have a business, you wouldn't have a job. So really, the client is signing your check, uh, including mine. Uh, I'm not paying you out of my pocket. This is coming straight from the client, So we got to be, you know, grateful to to them for giving us the opportunity to earn our living. And when you see things from that angle, like, nothing is going to bother you, nothing is going to is going to install you. You're just going to be humbly thankful that you're giving that opportunity.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
Oh, my goodness. I would. I want to I want to I want to have a Nico in Atlanta to take care of some of our investment properties and other people, because I can I can probably name a few people only in Atlanta that like, we need someone like Nico right here in Atlanta. So will you in the future. And I'm just putting that out there and you don't even have to answer it. Coach other painters to do what you do because what you're doing works. It's, it's beautiful. It's not just transactional. It's it's, it's based in gratitude. It's based in in passion and purpose. I mean, would that be a possibility?

Nico Basurto:
I think so. Like. Like, you know, like I said, I coach soccer for 13 years. And so in a way, I feel like I'm I'm my my guys, my teammates coach because I'm always, you know, leading and I'm always reading books and listening to audios and all the stuff. And so every every Monday the team meeting is literally a coaching session. Like I, I try to explain to them and play scenarios and we role play, you know, leadership scenarios like, you know, if we do this, how is this person taking it If we but if you say this way that you lead in the way they're going to feel much more, you know, respected and they're going to feel like they're being heard. And so it's always I feel like I'm internally a coach, you know, for sure without without even pretending or without that being the intention. Right?

Brigitta Hoeferle:
Yeah, for sure. And I can see that you could help so many other organizations, corporations, no matter how big or small, really have a great structure and a great foundation of being the very best that they that they can be in their greater area. And that leads me to you brought a gift for our listeners. So if you're in the Bay Area, you guys listen closely because it's about to happen. So you brought a gift. Nico, share with us what you brought.

Nico Basurto:
Yes. So, um, to any new client or existing client that is watching this, you know, feel free to contact me and I will honor one hour of work for you for touching up your home. Um, and, you know, no charge. No, no. You don't have to feel obligated to buy anything else or nothing. It's just, you know, something that I want to offer to the audience. Um, and, you know, it could be, you know, just touching up a door or painting anything that we can fit in one hour's worth of work. That is, is is is for you guys.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
That is such a beautiful gift. I don't think anyone has ever. I know that anyone has ever brought such a gift to the Success Pattern show, and I love it. And again, I wish you were in Atlanta, because I would be like, here, I got a few doors, I got a barn door or two barn doors that need to be painted. So let's see. We have, um, look at this. Mom says she celebrates it. Love it. Absolutely. I celebrate that with her. And, um, you. How do people get in touch with you?

Nico Basurto:
Uh, either through email. I think email is a is a pretty solid way. So it's Nico and Iko at Basurto painting.com. So basurto is b a s u auto painting.com. Um, or you know, also on social media we mean not that I'm an expert on it, but I got people that support me on that. So Instagram is basurto dash painting. Linkedin is Basurto painting, uh, Facebook Basurto painting. And then Twitter is also basurto painting. So pretty consistent throughout the platforms. And you know, all those messages do get to me and I, you know, we might, you know, limited tech abilities. I do reply to them and, and, you know, I'm not super active on it because I'm busy. You know, again, you know, serving the homeowners and keeping their homes beautiful and and coaching my team and making sure that we are giving the absolute best possible service. You know, painting is just something that we do that we practice. But really, what we stand behind is just, you know, absolute, you know, top quality service to to homeowners.

Brigitta Hoeferle:
You're it sounds like you're not busy. You're being very productive in a very beautiful way. So I really appreciate that. Again, for anyone that's watching from the Bay Area, definitely get with Nico, everyone else, follow him on all of the social media platforms. Linkedin, Instagram, Facebook, God knows where you will find him. Nico Basulto Basulto is his spelled his last name. Nico Basurto:
Uh, last words. There's a quote that I think I modified it from something that I saw on online, but it's really I tweaked it and made it my own. So it goes something like this. You know, it says whatever it takes, anything is possible. Success is my only option.
